We do DOT physicals in Hastings MN 55033 and want to see you succeed. Many drivers make simple, avoidable mistakes that end up costing them their medical certification and their livelihood. By understanding the most common mistakes ahead of time, you can walk into our office with total confidence. Here are six common mistakes that will fail your next exam and exactly how to avoid them before walking through our doors.

  1. Make sure you are managing/monitoring your Blood Pressure.

High blood pressure is a very common reason for failing your exam. There are strict guidelines regarding blood pressure with good reason. The examiner can issue a short term card in some instances allowing you to get your blood pressure under control, or it can be a fail.

  2. Not being truthful with your Medical History or Medications.

Not disclosing details about past surgeries, recent medical diagnoses, or prescription medications risks not only failing the exam but also facing severe legal consequences for falsifying federal documents. Medical examiners performing DOT physicals are highly trained to look for clinical signs of undisclosed conditions.

  3. Not having your glasses/contacts or hearing aids at exam.

This might not seem important, but you will fail the exam if you can't meet standard vision and hearing requirements. Plus, if you have to return to the office again with them, you are charged for our time. So bring what you need.

  4. Proof of CPAP compliance is required.

If you have a sleep disorder like sleep apnea, you must show that you are compliant with its usage. You can't pass without this confirmation. Again, if you dont' bring it with you and you have to return, you are charged for our time.

  5. If you have blood sugar issues, come hydrated and prepared.

A standard and mandatory part of the examination involves a urinalysis. This is not a drug test, but rather a screening for underlying medical conditions that could affect your driving. The examiner looks for indicators like protein, blood, and sugar (glucose) in your urine. High glucose levels can be a strong indicator of kidney disease or uncontrolled diabetes, both of which are major red flags for the FMCSA and require immediate attention.

  6. Bring what you need!

You know your health history, if you have had seizures, surgeries, heart problems, diabetes, or any other health history that may effect your ability to drive, bring documentation from your treating providers that informs us that you are being treated, its working and you are safe to drive. Bring with what you will need for us to help you succeed with the exam. This saves you time and money.
